Ashok Tanwar’s Political Journey Across Parties

Ashok Tanwar, the former Congress MP from Sirsa, was once the Haryana Congress chief between 2014 and 2019. However, internal disputes led Tanwar to exit the party in 2019 as he sought new political affiliations. He had joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021 and then changed his party to AAP in 2022. He then ended his affiliation with the AAP party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections when he acted against Arvind Kejriwal's decision to forge an alliance with the Congress. Then in January 2024, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to contest the general elections under the BJP lotus symbol. He lost though to the Congress's Kumari Selja in Sirsa.

Congress Welcomes Tanwar's Return

The Congress, has welcomed Ashok Tanwar back to its fold. The party posted on X, formerly Twitter: "The Congress has always raised its voice for the oppressed and deprived sections of society. Influenced by our struggle and dedication, senior BJP leader, former MP, and star campaigner Ashok Tanwar has rejoined the Congress."

Ashok Tanwar returned to Congress just a day before Assembly elections in the state, and votes will be counted on Tuesday. Interestingly, hours before his return to the Congress, Tanwar was quite vocal in tweeting support for BJP candidates in the Haryana Assembly election. Those tweets were deleted soon after he appeared with Rahul Gandhi at the rally, going on 'ghar wapasi' (homecoming) to the Congress. A postgraduate from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) holding an MPhil and PhD, Tanwar initiated his political career with the student wing of the Congress, known as National Students Union of India (NSUI). After that, he was NSUI president followed by Indian Youth Congress president. He then moved higher and higher on the party ladder.
