Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the state minister for electronics and information technology, stated to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that the government has no intention of using Aadhaar data for the census.
Aadhaar data is not intended for use in census counting as the two systems serve different purposes. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) assigns residents of India a 12-digit unique identity number called an Aadhaar (UIDAI).
It contains demographic and biometric information about an individual, such as their name, address, date of birth, gender, fingerprints, iris scans, and photograph. The primary objective of Aadhaar is to provide a universal identification infrastructure for the delivery of various social welfare services and subsidies to residents of India.
On the other hand, census counting is a process of collecting, compiling, and publishing demographic, social, and economic data of all people living in a country. The census aims to provide accurate statistics on the size, distribution, and characteristics of the population.
While Aadhaar data can provide valuable information for policy planning and service delivery, it is not designed to serve as a comprehensive source of population data for the census. Therefore, it is not appropriate to use Aadhaar data for census counting.
