A teacher's fall from grace - How Tripta Tyagi's slapping row shut down a school in Muzaffarnagar

The Neha Public School in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, where a Muslim child was slapped by his classmates on the order of a teacher, has been closed for a few days while an investigation is conducted, officials said on Sunday.

On the boy's family's complaint, the instructor, Tripta Tyagi, was arrested under bailable charges as outrage erupted from all sides. The education department also gave the school a notice about the situation.

The person who recorded the video has also described what happened in the meantime.

The August 24 incident was finally made public after a video of Tripta Tyagi instructing her children to hit a Muslim child went viral. In the video, Tripta Tyagi is seen reportedly making a racial slur and ordering the students to slap a Muslim child.

As the teacher watches, the student can be seen sobbing while standing close to the teacher's desk as his fellow students alternately hit him. Also audible is Tripta Tyagi telling a student to strike the Muslim child more forcefully.

The Muzaffarnagar teacher has defended her actions and described the incident as a "minor issue". She claimed that while getting a student smacked by his peers was improper on her part, she was compelled to do it due to her disability and was unable to rise and reach the student who had not completed his assignment.

“There was pressure from the child's parents to be strict with him. I am handicapped, so I made some students slap him so that he would start doing his homework," Tripta Tyagi said.

Tripta Tyagi has also stated that she has no regrets and that she has the support of the entire town. “I am not ashamed. I have served the people of this village as a teacher. They all are with me. They have made laws, but we need to control the children in schools. This is how we tackle them," Tripta Tyagi was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The man who recorded the video has since claimed that the Muslim child was thrashed because he hadn't finished his homework. Madam was beating up the kid. She claimed that Muslim women visit their parents' homes, keeping their children away from school, he said.

However, the child's father has insisted that the incident had nothing to do with the community. He has taken his child out of school and will not be complaining about the institution.
