Rahul Verma, the accused in the murder of Mumbai-based fashion designer Shri Adesh Bajpai, was today sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 75,000/-by the Learned Court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Court No.-2, Lucknow.
In accordance with an order from the High Court of Judicature in Allahabad dated October 8, 2010, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered two cases on November 18, 2010, taking over File Nos. 842/2008 of PS Kalyanpur, District Kanpur Nagar, and FIR No. 137/2008 of PS Moolganj, District Kanpur Nagar.
On September 3, 2008, at PS- Kalyanpur, District Kanpur Nagar, the case related to FIR No. 842/2008 was registered under sections 302, 201 of the Indian Penal Code in response to a complaint made by the IIT Kanpur Security Officer, who stated that bones in a gunny bag were found in the Old Type-III area of the IIT Kanpur Campus. Panchayatnama/PM and an investigation were then conducted.
The second case that the CBI took over concerned FIR No. 137/2008, which was filed under Section 364 of the Indian Penal Code on October 13, 2008, at PS-Moolganj, Kanpur. This was based on a written complaint that was filed on August 20, 2008, by Shri Surya Kumar Bajpai, R/o District- Thane, Maharastra, regarding the gumshudgi (missing) of his son, Shri Aadesh Bajpai, who was reported missing from Moolganj Chauraha, Kanpur Nagar.
After an investigation, it was discovered that the late Mumbai fashion designer Adesh Bajpai arrived in Lucknow on August 4, 2008, and left for Kanpur on August 10, 2008. Both the accused Rahul Verma and the departed Adesh Bajpai belonged to a group. On August 10, 2008, Adesh Bajpai and Rahul Verma, the accused, left Moolganj Chauraha, Kanpur, in the evening.
In the course of the investigation, the CBI arranged for the Skull Super Imposition Test to be performed by CFSL, Chandigarh experts, the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad experts, to analyze mitochondrial DNA from bones recovered from the premises of IIT Kanpur, and the Forensic Psychological Assessment of accused Rahul Verma to be performed by CFSL, New Delhi experts. According to the DNA expert, Adesh Bajpai's bones were found there.
These expert tests, reports, and circumstantial evidence proved the accused's involvement in the deceased's murder. Accused was taken into custody on January 24, 2012.
Following an investigation into both cases, the CBI filed a common charge sheet in the Court of Ld. Special Judicial Magistrate, CBI Cases, Lucknow on April 20, 2012, against Rahul Verma, R/o Lucknow.
Following the trial, the court found Rahul Verma guilty as a result of the CBI's successful prosecution, compelling evidence, witness examinations of 44, exhibits of 66 documents, and 16 material objects during the trial and he was imposed with the appropriate sentence.
