The Border Security Force (BSF) 81 Battalion, stationed in Sonamura under Sepahijala district, intercepted an attempt to smuggle gold and seized 2.177 kilograms of the precious metal, valued at approximately ₹1.74 crore. The operation took place on Thursday in the NC Nagar area near the India-Bangladesh border, officials confirmed.
Smugglers Use Heavy Fog to Escape
According to officials, the operation was initiated following intelligence inputs about potential gold smuggling in the region. Around 8:45 PM on Thursday, 2-3 Bangladeshi smugglers crossed the border and discarded some items. Despite BSF's prompt response, the smugglers managed to escape under the cover of heavy fog.
Assistant Commandant of BSF 81 Battalion, Somil Vohra, detailed the sequence of events: "At approximately 6 PM, we received information about possible gold smuggling through NC Nagar. Acting swiftly, we set up an ambush with our team. The operation lasted from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. During this time, we observed smugglers crossing the border and discarding items. While we waited to apprehend someone attempting to retrieve the goods, the smugglers managed to flee due to the dense fog."
