20 dead in Gujarat as lightning hits amid unprecedented rain

At least 20 individuals lost their lives due to lightning strikes across Gujarat during the weekend, as the state grapples with unexpected rainfall, as reported by an official to news agency PTI.

The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) disclosed that a total of 20 fatalities linked to rain-related incidents were documented in various districts of Gujarat. These casualties, attributed to lightning strikes, occurred amid the intense unseasonal downpour that hit the state on Sunday.

Providing a district-wise breakdown of the unfortunate incidents, the SEOC official mentioned four casualties in Dahod, three in Bharuch, two in Tapi, and one each in Ahmedabad, Botad, Kheda, Amreli, Banaskantha,  Mehsana, Surat, Surendranagar, Panchmahal, Sabarkantha and Devbhumi Dwarka. Expressing condolences for the tragic loss of lives, Union Home Minister Amit Shah affirmed that the local administration is actively involved in relief and rescue operations.

"I feel very sad about the news of many people passing away because of bad weather and lightning in different cities of Gujarat. I want to express my deepest sympathy to those who have lost their loved ones in this sad event. The local authorities are working to help, and I hope those who are injured get better soon," Shah shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

As per data from SEOC, several districts in Gujarat, Surat, etc, experienced rainfall ranging from 50 to 117 mm within a span of 16 hours. The India Meteorological Department predicts a gradual decrease in rainfall activity starting from Monday.
