157 new nursing colleges get nod from the cabinet

The Cabinet granted approval on April 26 for the establishment of 157 new nursing colleges adjacent to existing medical colleges. The Director General of the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Rajesh Malhotra, shared the news on Twitter. The budget for this project is Rs 1,570 crores, and the nursing colleges are expected to admit 15,700 students each year, aiming to provide affordable, high-quality, and equitable nursing education throughout the country. The new colleges' co-location with existing medical colleges is expected to optimize the use of infrastructure.

This initiative is part of the government's broader plan to expand medical education facilities, which was announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, 2023. The government aims to improve skilling and develop specialized medical equipment operation abilities. In addition to constructing new nursing colleges, the minister plans to introduce dedicated multidisciplinary courses in existing institutions to ensure skilled personnel availability for future medical technologies, high-end manufacturing, and research.
