15 yrs after 26/11: Reflections on Mumbai's devastating terror attack

The Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the three-day-long incident. The solemn ceremony took place at the martyrs' memorial within the premises of the Police Commissioner's Office in South Mumbai, with senior police officials and the families of the deceased policemen also expressing their respects.

The 26/11 terror attack

On 26th November, 2008, 10 Pakistani terrorists infiltrated south Mumbai through the sea, conducting attacks at multiple locations in the city. The indiscriminate assault by the Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) resulted in the loss of 166 lives and injuries to over 300 people.

The locations attacked included Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Oberoi Trident, Taj Mahal Hotel, Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, and Nariman House (now Nariman Light House). While one terrorist, Ajmal Amir Qasab, was captured alive, others were neutralized in the four-day siege. Qasab was sentenced to death in May 2010 and hanged in a Pune prison two years later.

Recently, just before the anniversary, Israel reconfirmed its designation of LeT as a terrorist organization. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat, in a statement to PTI, affirmed that the designation, initially implemented in 2013, has been officially reiterated in recent records. It's noteworthy that six individuals of Jewish descent were among those killed during the 26/11 attacks, particularly at the Jewish outreach center of Chabad House (Nariman House). This context also coincides with Israel's ongoing conflict with Hamas.

On this solemn anniversary, the nation collectively remembers the victims' sacrifices, emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant against future threats.
