With 60% of the population working, it is crucially important to establish safe and supportive places to work.
Mental Health and Work
The WHO argues that healthy working conditions provide a protective factor for mental health. It ensures safe workplaces are assured to bring well-being, increased job satisfaction, and productive levels. Hazardous work environments characterized by discrimination and harassment and unhealthy conditions constitute to the risk of mental health disorders. Also play a key factor in the quality of life and productivity. Unmonitored mental health disorders lead to depression, anxiety and other conditions that affect worker participation in the workplace or even their overall performance. Depression and anxiety cost around 12 billion work days annually. Such an implication sets a clear course for intervention action. Psychosocial risks or hazards like stigma or hazardous conditions mostly lie in those people with who are lowly paid or insecurely employed jobs. Without mental health support, such employees may suffer a lowered level of confidence, increased levels of absenteeism and may create employment difficulties.
Collaborative Action to Improve Mental Health
The WHO calls on governments, employers, and organizations to collaborate to achieve mentally healthy workplaces. Collaboration with workers, especially those with the lived experience of mental health challenges in developing effective solutions.
