The meeting led to the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme, a significant worldwide initiative to protect the environment. This occasion also commemorated the declaration of June 5 as World Environment Day. Since then, the UNEP has participated in several worldwide initiatives to protect the environment.

"Ecosystem Restoration" will be the focus of World Environment Day in 2023 as part of the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign. The substance acts as a reminder that people's activities regarding plastic damage as it slowly creeps into our seas, soil, and forests and causes permanent harm. The Netherlands upholds the day whereas Côte d'Ivoire facilitates it.
