Gipsy Kings, a Grammy Award-winning legend, to perform in India

Two families that are linked by blood and marriage—the Reyes and the Baliardos—fled oppression and settled in France at the time of the Spanish Civil War. They used music as a means of preserving their culture and engaging with their indigenous practices in the foreign nation where they were surrounded by unfamiliar individuals. One of the most popular bands in the world, Gipsy Kings, was founded by their descendants. Their music keeps listeners moving to the beats and is a blend of flamenco, Western pop, and Latin music. Gipsy Kings, the 2014 Grammy Award winner, will be on stage at Phoenix Marketcity in Pune on Wednesday.

“We are very happy to be performing in Pune. We are looking forward to making a Gipsy fiesta with fans and audience and our music. We have a diverse repertoire of songs that blend flamenco, pop, and Latin influences. We will be playing some of our hits that have brought us this far,” the band said in an email interview.

For more than 25 years, the band's lead guitarist Tonino Baliardo and lead singer Nicolas Reye have continued the tradition. Until their music made them renowned, they claimed to have come from a poor background and played at gatherings including weddings, festivals, and parties. Their term came about when they soon spread their sound to every region of France and started leading a gypsy lifestyle.

Gipsy Kings are known for their brand of Rumba Flamenca music, which has given rise to international successes including "Bamboleo," "Djobi Djoba," and "Bem Bem Maria." Their 1987 album spent 40 weeks on the US charts.

2013 saw the release of "Savor Flamenco," which took home the Grammy for Best World Music Album. “The album was inspired by our deep-rooted cultural heritage and their passion for flamenco music. We had a strong desire to reconnect with our musical heritage and pay homage to the flamenco tradition that has shaped their artistic journey. The album represents a culmination of our experiences, influences, and musical evolution over the years” they said.
