Trailblazing actor Richard Roundtree , known for 'Shaft', passes away at 81

Mr. Richard Roundtree, the esteemed pioneer of black action heroes, peacefully passes away at the age of 81.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of the actor Richard Roundtree, who was widely recognized for his unforgettable role as the sophisticated private detective in the renowned "Shaft" movies of the early 1970s. Regrettably, he succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 81, peacefully passing away at his residence in Los Angeles on Tuesday. It is worth mentioning that he also bravely fought and triumphed over breast cancer in 1993, undergoing a double mastectomy.

Roundtree's enduring influence on the industry, as emphasized by his longtime manager Patrick McMinn, should not be underestimated. His groundbreaking role played a pivotal role in advancing the representation of African-American leading men, establishing a new benchmark in Hollywood.

Roundtree, who was born in New Rochelle, New York, made his mark as the first Black action hero by portraying the street-smart character of John Shaft in the 1971 film directed by Gordon Parks. This represented a notable change in how Black actors were depicted in Hollywood, particularly in prominent roles. The blaxploitation genre predominantly targeted African-American viewers, and Roundtree's captivating performance left a deep impact.

After experiencing initial success, Roundtree went on to reprise his role in the sequels "Shaft's Big Score" (1972) and "Shaft in Africa" (1973). Furthermore, he skillfully portrayed the detective in the CBS television series "Shaft" in 1973, although it unfortunately only ran for seven episodes. In the year 2000, Roundtree made a comeback in a revival of "Shaft" alongside Samuel L. Jackson, taking on the role of Jackson's uncle. This version aimed to appeal to a wider range of viewers. 

Samuel L. Jackson sincerely honoured Roundtree, praising him as the "ultimate example" and the "finest in his field" in a touching social media message. He stressed that Roundtree's contribution as the creator of SHAFT is timeless and irreplaceable.

Over a career that spanned more than 50 years, Roundtree left an indelible mark on films including Earthquake, Friday, Roots, Cop, and Se7en. and What Men Want. Notably, he also graced television screens with memorable roles in Magnum P.I., The Love Boat, Being Mary Jane and The Love Boat.

In 1995, Roundtree was honoured with a highly commendable lifetime achievement award at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which serves as evidence of his long-lasting influence on the entertainment industry. Richard Roundtree's legacy will be remembered for eternity.
