Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba movie review: A Twisty Tale of Love, Deceit, and Revenge

Ek Hasina Thi, do Deewane the - Jayprad Desai’s Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is the kind of film that grabs your attention from the very first frame and doesn’t let go until the credits roll. As the sequel to the popular Haseen Dillruba, it brings back the same core characters but with added layers of intrigue and intensity. The film takes off right where the first installment left us, with Rani Kashyap (Taapsee Pannu) and Rishu Saxena (Vikrant Massey) hiding their identities, hoping for a happily ever after. But as we know, life isn’t always that simple, especially in a story penned by Kanika Dhillon.

The script delivers unexpected twists and turns that make this film an even more captivating romantic thriller than its predecessor. The chemistry between the leads, combined with a tight screenplay and on-point direction, ensures that Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is not just a continuation but an evolution of the story.

Sunny Kaushal: The Scene-Stealer

While Taapsee Pannu and Vikrant Massey have already proven their mettle in the first film, it’s Sunny Kaushal who emerges as the dark horse in this sequel. His portrayal of Abhimanyu Pandit, who starts as a romantic chocolatey hero and transitions into a cold-blooded murderer, is nothing short of spectacular. Kaushal manages to toe the line between charm and menace with such finesse that it’s hard not to feel a sense of unease whenever he’s on screen. His performance adds a fresh dynamic to the already complex relationship between Rani and Rishu.

However, where the film truly excels is in its ability to maintain the flamboyant essence of its characters, a hallmark of the original. Director Jayprad Desai succeeds in bringing out the eccentricities of each character, while Dhillon’s writing introduces a new kind of crazy that matches the intensity of Rani and Rishu.

A Few Missing Pieces

While the film has many strengths, it’s not without its flaws. One noticeable absence is the supporting characters who added depth to the first film. The societal expectations and familial pressures that were subtly woven into the original narrative are less pronounced here. Except for the character of Poonam, who is singularly focused on getting intimate with Rishu, the sequel lacks the richness that secondary characters brought to the table in Haseen Dillruba.

Vikrant Massey, although still effective, doesn’t get as much focus in this installment. His character, which was more twisted and complex in the first film, feels somewhat sidelined in favor of the new dynamics introduced by Kaushal’s character.

Final Thoughts

Despite these minor drawbacks, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba is a gripping watch that surpasses its predecessor in many ways. With better production values, a more engaging screenplay, and standout performances, it keeps you hooked till the end. Suppose there’s a part three in the works. In that case, one can only hope that Dhillon pushes the boundaries further, delivering an even edgier narrative while preserving the nuances that made the original so compelling.
