Goodbye Review: Delightful moments but too long even for Amitabh Bachchan’s presence

Have you got plans to watch Goodbye over the next week? Read this review of the film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rashmika Mandanna, and Neena Gupta in the lead roles.

The Plot of the movie :

The passing of a beloved one always has an impact on how people live their lives and how they perceive the outside world. The Vikas Bahl-directed film Goodbye tells the story of how a dysfunctional family comes together after Gayatri, played by Neena Gupta, passes away, with Harish Bhalla, played by Amitabh Bachchan, ruling the roost. Accepting reality and adjusting to one another's lifestyles are major themes in the story. Children of Bachchan and Neena Gupta are played by Rashmika Mandanna, Pavail Gulati, Sahil Mehta, and Abhishek Khan.

What worked in the movie :

Goodbye has some delightful moments sprinkled throughout the story, whether it be the flashback scenes that capture Amitabh Bachchan, Neena Gupta, and the entire family interacting, the episode with Sunil Grover that lasts for 20 minutes, Big B's monologue on the bank of the Ganga, or some humorous moments in the first half. The music of Amit Trivedi fits the movie nicely. The songs "Jaikal Mahakal," "Chann Pardesi," and "Maaye" are all very moving.

What didn't work in the movie :

goodbye cast

The length is excessively long for a plot that revolves around death, and children's characters don't get much screen time. If not for everyone, Rashmika Mandanna's character at least deserved a backstory, which would have given the narrative another layer of depth. While everything moves along smoothly in the first half, the second half suffers from an excess of emotional scenes and a lack of sufficient build-up. The movie also falls short when it comes to humour.

Overall, the star of Goodbye, Amitabh Bachchan, is its heart and soul. He is simply terrific throughout, demonstrating why he is so valuable as an actor. It is enjoyable to see Neena Gupta having fun in her role as Gayatri in this movie. Her character is arguably the best drawn. Overall, Goodbye succeeds because of the performances, relatability element, and moving moments. The strange developments, mediocre second half, and gloomy tone, however, make the movie suffer. An account of the various shades of mourning that is shorter and more compelling is buried in the 144-minute duration.
