Jimmy Fallon has not died, and he wants everyone to know that. The death prank seems to just be a component of a larger issue with the impersonator Twitter accounts that have created a mess everywhere since Elon Musk took over as the new owner.
Since Tuesday evening, the hashtag #RIPJimmyFallon has been trending on Twitter. The death spoof began when a tweet purporting to be from "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" began circulating on Twitter.
The fraud appears to be part of an ongoing issue with imposter accounts on Twitter spreading misinformation. Accounts with blue checkmarks on Twitter have been mimicking organizations such as pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and PepsiCo, sending spoof messages claiming that insulin is now free and Coca-Cola is superior to Pepsi.
"We are compelled to announce, with deep hearts, the passing of Jimmy Fallon, our very own late-night legend," said the post from the Tonight Show's official account. 1923-2022.”
It also included a specific photograph of Fallon with his favourite dog, which added credibility. The claim was quickly discredited, but Jimmy Fallon is in good health and doing well. Many people questioned this post because the birth year indicated, "1923." That meant Jimmy had been living for 99 years, which is untrue. Jimmy Fallon was born in 1974.
Celebrities are cited multiple times in fake death posts, but people must engage in mass reporting of such fakes. As you may have spotted, the post improperly said that Jimmy was born in 1923. He was born in the year 1974.
Despite the inaccuracy, tens of thousands of tweets with the hashtag #RIPJimmyFallon have been trending on the social media network. People are also tagging photographs of other celebrities, such as Matt Damon, James Cordon, and Steve Harvey, with the hashtag.
But there is good news! Fallon is still alive!!!!
The former "Saturday Night Live" cast member tweeted at Twitter's new CEO, Elon Musk, requesting that the hashtag be removed. The father of two and married comedian wrote, “Elon, can you fix this? #RIPJimmyFallon" #RIPJimmyFallon”. Later to which Elon Musk responded, ‘Fix What?’
Since Musk acquired Twitter in October, the platform has faced several hurdles, including impersonated accounts, purchased verifications, a rise in misinformation, and a slew of firings and layoffs within the company. Musk demanded that Twitter staff work "extended hours" in an email sent to the entire firm on Wednesday.
