96th Oscars shortlists announced for 10 categories, 'Barbie' leads with 5 nominations

The shortlists for the 96th Oscars ceremony have been revealed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in ten categories. The categories are Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound, and Visual Effects.

Barbenheimer has once again dominated the list like every other awards nominations, with Barbie receiving five nominations, and Oppenheimer receiving nominations in Three categories for Oscars 2024.

Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ earned recognition in categories such as, original songs for its three submissions including performance by Billie Eilish ('What I Was Made For?') and Dua Lipa ('Dance the Night') and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt ('I’m Just Ken'). Barbie also received a nomination in Sound as well as an original score composed by the latter duo, however unexpectedly, it faced a setback in the makeup and hairstyling category, surprising many despite its overall strong presence.

Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer' has earned nominations in three categories: Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, and Original Score.

Martin Scorsese's 'Killers of the Flower Moon' has earned four nominations, including one in the original song category. J.A. Bayona’s 'Society of the Snow,' drawing parallels to last year's unexpected success 'All Quiet on the Western Front,' secured four Oscars.

'The Color Purple' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' did not make it to the shortlist. Instead, A24's eccentric 'Beau is Afraid' and Universal Pictures' horror summer film 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter' secured spots.

Nominations included Black talents like Jon Batiste ('American Symphony') and Kris Bowers ('The Color Purple'), the renowned female musician Laura Karpman ('American Fiction'), and nonbinary artist Mica Levi, an Oscar nominee for ‘Jackie,’ acknowledged for ‘The Zone of Interest.’ Mark Orton's inclusion for ‘The Holdovers,’ despite prior speculation about its eligibility, was a pleasant and commendable surprise according to the branch.

This time, there were no shortlisted films from India.
