US widens probe into Adani Group, focuses on founder's conduct

The United States has expanded its investigation into the Adani Group, particularly focusing on the actions of its founder, Gautam Adani, as reported on March 15.

According to sources familiar with the matter, prosecutors are investigating whether companies or individuals associated with Adani, including Mr. Adani himself, were involved in bribery schemes aimed at obtaining preferential treatment for an energy project in India.

The American investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York and the Justice Department's Enforcement Unit in Washington, is also investigating Indian renewable energy company Azure Power Global.

When contacted for comment, Adani Group told Bloomberg News that it was not aware of any investigations against its chief executive. However, Adani Group and Azure Power, as well as the Justice Department, did not immediately respond for comment.

Shares and bonds of the Adani Group suffered significant losses last year due to US allegations. Short-seller Hindenburg Research accused the group of poor management practices, stock manipulation, and the use of tax havens. Adani Group has strongly denied these claims.
