Canada & India discuss critical Mineral Mining cooperation

In the midst of difficult diplomatic tensions between the two nations, a senior Indian minister held discussions on Monday with Canadian officials about enhancing critical mineral mining cooperation.

India's Minister of Coal and Mines Pralhad Joshi "resolved to strengthen the supply chain of critical minerals," In discussions with the premier of Canada's Yukon Territory, Ranj Pillai, according to a statement from the ministry.

The statement did not specify the critical minerals under discussion, although it did include lead, zinc, silver, gold, asbestos, iron, and copper as some of Yukon's most important mineral resources.

On the fringes of the G20 conference in New Delhi earlier this month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about his deep worries regarding Sikh protests in Canada.

For its part, Canada has paused dialogue over a potential trade agreement with India. A scheduled trade mission to India has also been postponed by Canadian Trade Minister Mary Ng.
