Maruti, Kia announce price cuts of Upto Rs. 1.65 lacs, GST discounts offer Diwali Bonanza

The Indian automobile industry is witnessing a significant shift in pricing thanks to the recently implemented GST 2.0 reforms. Effective from September 22, 2025, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate rationalization has prompted automakers across the country to reduce prices of their vehicles. These changes are designed to make car ownership more affordable, boost sales during the festive season, and provide long-term benefits to consumers. From popular mass-market brands like Maruti, Hyundai, Kia, Tata, and Mahindra to premium and luxury players including Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, and Jaguar Land Rover, virtually all segments of cars have been impacted.

Understanding GST 2.0 and Its Impact on Car Prices

The government announced a sweeping GST rationalization on 4 September 2025, marking one of the most significant reforms in India’s indirect taxation since the GST was introduced in July 2017. The previous four-tier GST structure—5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%—has now been simplified to two primary tax slabs: 5% for essential goods and 18% for discretionary items. A new 40% tax bracket has been introduced for luxury products, including high-end cars and tobacco.

To streamline taxation in the automobile sector, the GST Council also redefined the criteria for vehicle taxation:

  • Small cars: Less than 4 meters in length, with petrol engines under 1,200 cc and diesel engines under 1,500 cc, taxed at 18%.

  • Luxury or bigger cars: More than 4 meters in length, petrol engines over 1,200 cc, and diesel engines over 1,500 cc, taxed at 40%.

  • Hybrid vehicles: Taxed according to the same criteria as above.

  • Electric vehicles (EVs): Continue to attract the lowest 5% GST rate.

This restructuring ensures that small, fuel-efficient, and budget-friendly vehicles become significantly more affordable, while luxury and high-performance cars continue to cater to premium buyers.

What This Means for Indian Car Buyers

The GST 2.0 reforms are perfectly timed for India’s festive season, traditionally the peak period for car sales. Consumers can now buy compact cars, mid-size SUVs, or premium vehicles at historically low prices. This move is expected to boost demand, encourage personal mobility, and stimulate India’s automobile market across all segments—from budget-friendly hatchbacks to high-end luxury SUVs.

For automakers, these revisions not only help pass on the benefits of taxation but also strengthen brand presence, enhance competitiveness, and incentivise customers to upgrade to newer models.

The GST 2.0 rationalisation has effectively lowered car ownership costs across India. By reducing tax rates and defining vehicle categories more clearly, the government has provided both affordability and clarity to buyers. With Maruti, Hyundai, Kia, Tata, Mahindra, Toyota, Honda, Renault, MG, Volkswagen, Skoda, Jeep, Citroen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, and JLR all passing on benefits to their customers, this is arguably one of the largest coordinated price corrections in India’s automobile history. Whether you are looking for a small city car, a family SUV, or a luxury vehicle, the timing couldn’t be better to explore the Indian car market.
