BMW has stepped up from its black-to-white colour changing abilities of the BMW iX Flow concept to a 32 colour upgrade with i Vision Dee, an electric sports car concept showcased in the CES 2023. This update in the concept car has opened the possibility to truly change colour in real time.

BMW’s show-off, I Vision Dee comes in the form of a compact sedan fused with BMW’s original look and latest car design giving the car a retro look. The key features of the I Vision Dee is its colour-changing ability, full width windscreen with screen project tech and Ai-powered virtual assistant. BMW has stated, “This allows an almost infinite variety of patterns to be generated and varied within seconds,”.

The I Vision Dee is coated using 240 E Ink e-paper segments which can be controlled individually, giving rise to the possibility of funky designs and light show. The concept uses tech developed by E Ink Corporation, based out of USA. The coating of the car contains tiny microcapsules whose pigments can change when electric charge is applied to it. It gets even more interesting as Prism 3, the latest version of E Ink tech is low electricity consuming with requiring electricity only while changing colours. The colour change can also be programmed for designs.

The question remains whether this interesting tech will be available to car for the general public. While motor enthusiasts and design freaks are engaged and BMW has put on a show, the highly sensitive tech must be developed to sustain the environmental factors such as sand granules, insects, high temperatures and the likes.

BMW is a German automobile manufacturer known for its sporty SUV’s and luxury sedans. The brand has a following among automobile enthusiasts looking for ruddy, aggressive looks and high performance everyday cars. The brand has made a place for itself with its M-Competition cars and this quirky update will be eagerly welcomed.
