Chaos in Patna: Water Cannons and Lathicharge as BPSC Aspirants Clash with Police

Hundreds of BPSC aspirants and students took to the streets in Patna on Tuesday, clashing with security personnel as they marched towards Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary’s residence. The massive protest turned volatile when students broke through multiple police barricades, prompting authorities to deploy water cannons and resort to lathicharges.

Key Highlights of the Protest:

• The Core Demands: The aspirants are protesting in the Gardanibagh area, demanding the cancellation of the 70th BPSC exam over alleged irregularities. Other demands include a single-tier exam for BPSC-TRE 4, transparency in the BSSC recruitment process, and fair opportunities for Hindi-medium candidates.

• The Clash: The march began at Gandhi Maidan and escalated rapidly as protesters breached the barricades. To control the swelling crowd, police fired water cannons and detained several agitators. Tension further increased when a farmers' group carrying black flags joined the students, leading to the deployment of CRPF personnel.

• Student Ultimatum: Rejecting talks with junior officials, student leaders have explicitly stated that they will only end their protest if granted a direct meeting with CM Samrat Choudhary or the Education Minister.

• Government's Response: Amidst the uproar, the Bihar government announced the launch of a 'Vidyarthi Sahyog Shivir' (Student Support Camp) that will be held on the fourth Tuesday of every month. A dedicated portal and helpline number (1100) were also introduced to track and resolve student grievances.
