Would you like to enjoy your coffee with your feet immersed in ankle-deep water while colourful fish swim around you? If the answer is yes, the Sweet Fish Café in Khanom, Thailand, could be the perfect spot for you! This café has ingeniously crafted this distinctive experience for its customers who adore fish and seek adventure. The Koi Pond café gained online fame when a Reddit user shared about this unique 'Fish Café,' where patrons sit in what appears to be an enclosed fishpond.
So, what is the Koi Pond Café all about?
It's a compact space with modest tables and chairs. The wooden floor is covered in ankle-deep water, teeming with numerous colourful fish, primarily Koi, swimming throughout the cafe. In addition to Koi and a few other species, they also have fish that provide a skin-nibbling experience, creating a spa-like atmosphere. You'll find a sign on the wall that reads "Sweet Fish Café." The overall ambience of the place is somewhat unusual yet undeniably intriguing.
How did it start?
This café is a component of the Ton Tarn Resort and Spa, a well-known tourist destination in Khanom. Yosamol Jitmung, the owner of the café, , had the idea to draw in customers and revitalize business after the pandemic, and it proved to be successful. He acknowledged that the concept for Sweet Fishs Café was inspired by the Amix Café in Vietnam, which was the first of its kind. Yosamol invested approximately 400,000 baht, equivalent to about $12,000, with the majority of the funds allocated to the fish and the filtration system.
The café has become a sensation on the internet, although some online users doubt its hygiene. According to Jitmung, who spoke to a news portal, the biggest challenge for the café is maintaining hygiene and ensuring good filtration. He mentioned that four large pool filters run 24/7, and his staff adds fresh water every morning before opening the café and in the evening after the last customer leaves. Visitors are required to take off their shoes, wash their feet, and remain barefoot inside the café. They are also advised not to disturb the fish in any way for their safety.
