Switzerland now has the world’s longest passenger train. This train has over 100 coaches, 4,550 seats, and measures 1910 metres. The train has been operational since October 29th,2022, it has been passing through the mountainous landscape in the Swiss Alps.
While there are longer freight trains, this was the longest passenger train. The train was named the world's longest train at an event marking the 175th anniversary of Switzerland’s railway system. This train can carry 150 passengers in one go. And the train comes with a digital destination sign on the front that reads “Alpine Cruise”.
This train recently completed a short trip through the mountainous region, setting a new Guinness World Record along the way. This record attempt was arranged by Rhaetian Railway and is a part of the Swiss rail industry’s celebration of the 175th anniversary of its first railway.
The trip took months to plan and required seven drivers and 21 technicians to complete. This wasn’t the first try as a prior attempt was planned but wasn't successful because of emergency brake and communication issues.
During this journey, they took a route from the Albula Tunnel in Preda to the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct just outside Filisur, according to a press release. The train travelled at a speed of 19 and 22 mph. The mammoth vehicle covered the distance in an hour, travelling at speeds of between 19 and 22 mph.
