The company that runs Delhi's airport, DIAL, announced on Monday that it has added a self-baggage drop (SBD) service at Terminal 3, which will cut down on the time travellers have to wait at the airport. SBD wants to make it easier for people to drop off their bags, shorten the time people have to wait by about 15–20 minutes, and improve the general airport experience. The Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) says that the building can serve up to three people per minute. At the moment, only domestic passengers will be able to use the facility. Once all the necessary approvals have been given, foreign passengers will also be able to use it. There are a total of 14 SBD machines, 12 of which are automatic and two of which are hybrids.
Currently, only IndiGo passengers will be able to use the service, but five other airlines, including Air India, Vistara, Air France, and KLM, are likely to let customers use self-baggage drop in the near future. Using the SBD feature requires two steps. After making their boarding passes and baggage tags at the self-check-in kiosk, travellers have to tag their check-in luggage.
At the SBD facility, they will have to scan their boarding pass, say that their bags don't contain any banned or dangerous things, and put their bags on the right belt. Once the process is finished, the bags will go automatically to the sorting room and then onto the plane. If the weight of the checked bag is more than what the flight allows, the machine won't take it. Near the building, there will be flight employees who can help people.
DIAL has been working hard to improve the experience of passengers at the Delhi airport through a number of digitization and automation projects. DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said that the Self-Baggage Drop service is meant to make passengers more independent while also cutting the time needed to process bags by a lot.
