All you need to know about the upcoming Google Pixel 8a

Google recently announced that its annual developer conference (Google I/O) will be held on May 14. The search engine behemoth will probably make some big announcements at this event, like a formal unveiling of the new Android 15 operating system. Considering its historical performance, Google may introduce the Pixel 8a, internally dubbed Akita, a low-cost smartphone.

The Pixel 7a from last year will be replaced by the Google Pixel 8a. This time, the Pixel 8a is anticipated to come with an enhanced design, the new Tensor chip, and several creative AI features already present in the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

Similar to Pixel 8

In terms of design, the future Pixel 8a could be similar to the Pixel 8's industrial design, with a metal frame, glass back, and candy bar form factor. The Pixel 8a will feature a more curved design than the Pixel 7a, which has a rectangular finish. This should make the Pixel 8a more comfortable to grasp. The phone also appears to have gained some weight, which suggests a larger battery—possibly with support for wireless charging, but limited to 5W—inside.

A leaked image of the retail box of the Pixel 8a by Android Police suggests that the phone would have a matte frame and back panel, and just like its predecessor, the device is expected to have an IP67 grade for water and dust resistance.

According to an earlier leak of the actual product image by 9to5Google, the Pixel 8a features a pill-shaped dual-camera island at the rear, similar to the Pixel 8. The dual-camera unit within the island rests flush with the metal camera bar at the back of the island, which also protrudes from the device, just like the Pixel 8.

The technical aspect

With a refresh rate of 90 Hz, the Google Pixel 8a's 6.1-inch screen is just smaller than the Pixel 8's 6.2-inch screen. The Pixel 8a's display characteristics are probably going to stay the same as those of the Pixel 7a, and it's probably going to be branded with the new "Actua" moniker that Google debuted for its smartphone screens with the Pixel 8 series. The next Google phone, however, is rumored to have significantly better screen protection along with a slightly greater brightness level.

The forthcoming smartphone, the Pixel 8a, is most likely to be powered by the Tensor G3 with 8 GB RAM, and its technological characteristics are anticipated to stay the same as those of the Pixel 8. Google is anticipated to release the A-series smartphone with 256 GB of storage in addition to the standard 128 GB model for the first time.

With their computational photography-powered cameras, Pixel smartphones are well-known for their best-in-class features, and the 8a is no exception. The Pixel 8a is rumored to feature a 13 MP ultra-wide-angle lens in addition to a 64 MP core sensor. Likely, the Pixel 8a's camera hardware won't change from the Pixel 7a. The upgraded chip (Tensor G3), which includes an improved image signal processor (ISP), should allow the phone to take better photographs and videos than its predecessor.

The launch date and price

On May 14, Google is expected to reveal the Google Pixel 8a, which will likely only be sold on Flipkart in India. We anticipate the Pixel 8a will cost no more than Rs 45,999, as the Pixel 7a was originally released in 2023 for Rs 43,999. Additionally, Google just began producing Pixel smartphones in India, which suggests that the Pixel 8a may wind up being less expensive than the Pixel 7a.
