Samsung Plans to Launch a Mixed Reality Headset in the Second Half of 2024

Along with the Galaxy Z Flip6 and the Galaxy Z Fold6, Samsung is rumoured to be considering the release of a mixed-reality (MR) headset in the second half of 2024. Prior to the release of the MR headset, the South Korean firm said that it would be working with Google and Qualcomm on its creation. In August, a prototype of the headset leaked online, sporting a sleek visor design and lightweight pancake lenses. However, Samsung seems to have abandoned this design in favour of a new headgear that will compete with Apple's offering.

Samsung will create the upcoming MR headset, which will make use of Samsung LSI camera sensors and OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) technology from the company. While there are rumors that Samsung's Exynos 2200 chipset will power the headset, it's also possible that Samsung will choose Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 chipset.

Although Samsung filed a trademark in the US for "Galaxy Glasses," the codename for the AR headset, "Infinite (muhan)," is currently unofficial. Samsung reportedly views the MR headset as a niche product and plans to initially produce only 30,000 units. Mass production of the headset is expected to begin in December of this year.

In recent years, Samsung has launched several extended reality devices, such as the Gear VR and Odyssey Plus, but discontinued them due to a lack of consumer interest. The upcoming MR headset is rumoured to be priced between Meta Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro, with an estimated price range of $1000 to $2000. However, these details may change as Samsung continues to refine the headset's hardware.
