Meta under scanner after Whatsapp outage, submits report to IT Ministry

The Whatsapp outage on Tuesday had a massive impact on users in India and worldwide when it lasted for a good two hours in the afternoon. Meta had later released a statement that a ‘technical error’ caused the disruption and that the issue had been resolved. However, the Indian IT Ministry took this sudden outage of services seriously and requested to share reasons for the disruption. Now, two days after the global outage, messaging platform WhatsApp seems to have submitted its report on the matter to the Ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY).

A sudden blackout of Whatsapp on Tuesday put users in India and neighbouring countries in an utter moment of panic. It lasted for two good hours leaving the users confused about the entire scenario of the app not working. The MeitY sources stated that it is procedural for MeitY to take action when there is any disruption to the internet in India’s geographical domain. These are primarily cybersecurity considerations to avoid any imminent cyberattack on Indian installations.

Tuesday afternoon turned out to be several moments of panic for users where they were not able to send or deliver texts or make calls via WhatsApp. The entire WhatsApp server was down. The Status feature along with the other crucial services such as Whatsapp Business failed to operate during these two hours.

After the services began to function Meta did not provide any substantial news or reports about the situation. However, they said that the “brief outage was a result of a technical error on our part and has now been resolved."
