Meta 'Threads' poised to challenge Twitter's microblogging supremacy

Instagram's parent company, Meta, has launched a new text-based communication app called Threads. The app is designed to be a more intimate and personal way to connect with close friends, and it can be accessed using your existing Instagram credentials. Shortly after its launch, the social media platform managed to amass an impressive 5 million sign-ups within a matter of hours, as announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
How does Threads App work?
The Threads app can now be downloaded in India from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Instagram users can easily follow the same accounts already on Instagram with a few clicks and can port following over rather than start from scratch on Threads. One can create a post or "Thread," and can select who's able to view it, which may be the entire world or a limited list of followers. Posts on this platform can be up to 500 characters long, which is more than Twitter's 280-character limit. They can also include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long.

Users of both Twitter and Instagram will find it gratifying to learn that they possess the ability to unfollow, report, block, or restrict profiles as per their preferences. actions can be accessed through the three-dot dropdown menu. Additionally, if you block a user on Instagram, they will automatically be blocked on Threads as well. Other noteworthy features encompass support for screen readers and AI-generated image descriptions. The screenshots provided to media show that the platform will have buttons to like, repost, reply to, and quote posts, as well as counters showing the number of likes and replies each post has received. This suggests that Meta is looking to replicate Twitter's core features in order to attract users who are unhappy with the platform's recent changes.

Threads app is not currently available in the European Union
Meta prioritized user safety by implementing measures such as enforcing Instagram's community guidelines and empowering users with tools to manage mentions and replies. However, the launch of Threads raised concerns about data privacy. Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and former CEO of Twitter, has voiced concerns about the permissions and data access requested by Meta's newly introduced app. In a tweet, Dorsey shared a screenshot of the app's listing on the App Store, showcasing its data requirements. Along with the screenshot, he humorously remarked, "All your Threads belong to us." Elon Musk also joined the conversation and commented on the post with a simple "Yeah." The app's data privacy disclosure on the App Store mentioned that Threads could potentially collect various personal information, including health, financial, contacts, browsing and search history, location data, purchases, and sensitive information. Threads App is now accessible for download in more than 100 countries, including the UK. However, its availability in the European Union is currently pending due to its stringent data privacy regulations.
