Instagram for iPhone upgrades, allows users to upload and see HDR photographs

Instagram has long supported HDR (high dynamic range) video uploading and watching on the iPhone 12 and newer versions. Meta, in partnership with Samsung, announced a new "Super HDR" function for the Galaxy S24 series (review), allowing users to upload and see native HDR photographs. A similar feature has quietly been extended to compatible iPhones.

Instagram's latest update

According to a report, unlike the Android version, HDR photographs can be uploaded and viewed without the requirement for the latest iPhone. You can upload and view High Dynamic Range (HDR) images on Instagram if you own an iPhone 12 or later model.

HDR Images on iPhone

An HDR photo is just a shot with a higher dynamic range. An HDR shot is typically defined as one that has been taken with 12 stops or more of dynamic range. An HDR photo will appear brighter and more colorful than a typical shot, and it will stand out against the rest of the user interface (UI) on a smartphone.

Both JPEG and HEIC HDR image formats are supported by modern iPhones. Likewise, if you own a MacBook with an M1 CPU or above, you can see these images in high definition as well.

It is important to note that any alterations made to a photograph captured on an iPhone will result in an SDR (standard dynamic range) image, as would any filter applied to the image. The phone's camera app must be used to take the picture. This feature was tested on an iPhone 15, and it performed as expected.
