India's PhonePe launches 'Indus App Store' to challenge Google with zero platform fees

On Saturday, PhonePe announced the launch of the Indus Appstore Developer Platform with zero platform fees and no in-app purchase commission as the fintech backed by Walmart races to win Android developers in Google’s largest market.

Bengaluru-based PhonePe, which has more than 450 million active users on its flagship payments app, announced that developers can begin registering and uploading apps on the made-in-India app store from today. The app store, for which PhonePe has also partnered with phone makers for distribution, features scores of locally relevant features including support for third-party payment providers, 12 Indian languages and a phone number-based login system.

PhonePe has announced that it will not charge any listing fee to developers for the initial year, but will move to a "nominal" fee thereafter. Furthermore, the startup will not charge a commission on In-App Purchases, as opposed to Google's current rate of 15-30%. PhonePe, the market leader in India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments market, has also announced that it has established a team based in India to provide support to developers. This is in response to the concerns expressed by local developers regarding Google's delayed responses and operating hours in the United States.

People familiar with the matter have revealed that PhonePe, which secured $850 million in recent quarters and successfully acquired IndusOS in 2021 after a legal dispute, has been diligently developing an app store for an extended period and regards it as a pivotal strategic initiative.
