The Indian government has approved the National Quantum Mission, which aims to promote and expand scientific and industrial research and development in the field of quantum technology. The mission will be implemented from 2023-24 to 2030-31 and will cost ₹6,003.65 crore. Its goal is to stimulate economic growth in India through the use of quantum technology and create a supportive ecosystem for it.
The mission aims to develop intermediate-scale quantum computers with 50-1000 physical qubits, satellite-based secure quantum communications, and long-distance secure quantum communications with other countries, among other objectives. Four thematic hubs focused on quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices will be established under the National Quantum Mission.
The initiative is expected to enhance India's technology development ecosystem to a globally competitive level and benefit various sectors such as communication, health, finance, and energy. Additionally, it will support national priorities such as Digital India, Make in India, Skill India, Stand-up India, Start-up India, Self-reliant India, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
