Google Upgrades Android Auto: Chrome Integration for Select Cars and more

In a major announcement at CES 2024, Google has introduced updates to enhance the Android Auto experience for both smartphone mirroring and vehicles equipped with Google's native Android software. It has introduced novel ways to share battery data and bringing Chrome to specific Polestar and Volvo models.

Real-time Battery Sharing with Google Maps

Electric vehicle (EV) owners are set to benefit from a new feature allowing them to share real-time battery information directly with Google Maps via Android Auto, propose charging stops en route, and predict charging times based on the vehicle.

Initially exclusive to vehicles with in-built Google capabilities, this functionality will soon extend to Android Auto users. This will debut in the Ford Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning models. The compatibility will progressively broaden to include other EV models.

Seamless Smartphone Integration

Owners of vehicles featuring native Google apps, termed 'Google built-in,' will now enjoy the convenience of sending driving directions directly from their smartphones to their cars. This cross-platform functionality is available for both iPhone and Android devices.

Chrome Browsing in Automobiles

For vehicles equipped with Android Automotive, including select Volvo and Polestar models, the integration of Google Chrome browsing capabilities is on the horizon. Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, anticipates the convenience of Chrome's connection to user accounts and personalized preferences.

Expanding App Ecosystem in the Automobile

Google aims to introduce new apps for vehicles with built-in Google services, enriching the in-car experience. Video streaming services such as Crunchyroll, PBS Kids, and The Weather Channel app will be seamlessly integrated, providing a broader range of entertainment options.

The Weather Channel app is now accessible for cars with Google built-in, offering users the ability to check hourly forecasts, follow-me alerts, and "Trip View" radar directly from the dashboard.

In a December update, Google enhanced its mapping services in India, introducing Lens and Live View. The company aims to broaden the presence of its apps and services in vehicles, collaborating with major automobile brands offering Google built-in.

Google Automotive Services (GAS)

The term "Google built-in" refers to Google Automotive Services (GAS), a licensed product provided to car manufacturers seeking to incorporate Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store as default features on their infotainment screens. GAS operates on top of Android Automotive, the native operating system running on vehicles.

Ongoing Feature Enhancements

Google is committed towards innovations in in-car technology. It continuously enhanced features for both Android Auto and Google built-in. This announcement follows a broader discourse on potential distractions caused by in-car interfaces, with safety experts expressing concerns and major automakers, including GM, imposing restrictions on phone-mirroring programs like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
