A new fee of Rs. 3 has been added to Google Pay for people who want to use the app's UPI service to recharge their phones. When users buy prepaid plans through Google Pay, they now have to pay this fee. This is different from how the app used to work, where payments made through Google Pay did not cost extra. Google Pay now charges the same amount for similar transactions as other payment apps like Paytm and PhonePe.
Google has not officially announced that convenience fees will be added to its payment app, even though this may have happened. Online, a customer shared a screenshot of a Jio prepaid recharge plan that included a Rs. 3 convenience fee. This is how users found out about the change. Several news sources say the fee is charged for both UPI and card purchases.
Tipper Mukul Sharma shared more information on Twitter, saying that there will be no convenience fee for recharge deals that cost less than Rs. 100. Charges of Rs. 2 and Rs. 3 will be added to deals between Rs. 100 and Rs. 200 and Rs. 200 to Rs. 300, though. A convenience fee of Rs. 3 will be charged for transactions over Rs. 300.
Since the new convenience fees were added, Google recently changed its terms of service for Indian users. This change may have been part of the November 10 update, but it's still not clear. Users will be told about any fees that apply before they complete a transaction, as stated in the policy. According to the rules, the company can choose how much to charge as well.
Even though the terms have changed, it's interesting that when we tried to buy Airtel and Jio recharge plans through Google Pay on Thursday, we didn't have to pay any extra fees when we went to recharge our phone. For now, it looks like the only way to avoid these fees is to buy recharge plans straight from the internet service provider.
Payment service providers like Paytm and PhonePe have been changing their rules in this way to make money by charging fees for transactions. Google Pay is now following suit. In order to do things like order food or book movie tickets, many online services have added similar fees.
