Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet company might soon be able to do business in India if the Indian government agrees. The Department for Promoting Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) seemed happy with Starlink's explanation of how its shares were held. This means that the business is now ready for approval from the government. Authorised to provide satellite transmission services are Indian companies OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications. The third company in India to do so will be Starlink, if it gets the go-ahead.
Intent letters (LoI) from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) could reach Starlink as early as this Wednesday. So far, Elon Musk's new company, SpaceX, hasn't said anything about this event. The final step is for the DoT to write a letter that the telecom secretary and minister of communications must sign. The department's Satellite Communications Wing (SCW) will give Starlink the permissions it needs to start doing business in India once they give their OK.The telecom secretary is in the US right now, but the minister of communications is in Davos for the World Economic Forum. People think that the legal process will go quickly when they get back.
