Donald Trump Arrest - Fake news gets realistic with AI twist

Fake pictures of former US President Donald Trump’s arrest are viral on the internet. The AI generated images look eerily close to real images. The images show the 76-year-old former President attempting to escape and resist the arrest by the New York Police Department. Trump is currently facing charges in front of the Manhattan grand jury for allegedly paying adult film star Stormy Daniels for her silence.

In 2018, Stormy Daniels filed a lawsuit against Donald Trump and his former attorney, Michael Cohen, alleging that they had attempted to silence her about the alleged affair through a non-disclosure agreement and a $130,000 payment made to her by Cohen just before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The lawsuit also alleged defamation by Trump on Twitter. While the case has garnered media attention with critics questioning the ethics of the former President, Trump has denied all allegations and claimed that the affair did not occur.

Elliot Higgins, the founder of Bellingcat had tweeted “Making pictures of Trump getting arrested while waiting for Trump's arrest”. Higgins has confirmed that the AI image generative engine Midjourney  v5 was used to generate fake images.

The artificially generated images of Trump have marvelled users about the capabilities of generative AI. With this being only the beginning of the generative AI evolution, it raises questions as to the extent to which AI can be used to generate false and manipulative content. It will make it easier for pedlars of fake news like ‘Team Jorge’ to now attach generated proof to their fictitious claim in duping people and spreading fake news.
