In partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the Indian government launched TELE MANAS, a telemental health service. It aims to help people in India's rural and remote areas who are often unable to get to mental health services because of distance, lack of resources, and the stigma associated with mental illness.
The government has also launched a mobile app called "eMental Health" that gives users access to mental health professionals via video conferencing and self-help tools like audio and video content.
Through video conferencing, phone calls, and chat platforms, the service offers remote consultations with mental health professionals like psychiatrists and psychologists. In addition, it provides audio and video content, education on mental health, and self-help resources to assist individuals in managing their mental health and well-being.
The COVID-19 pandemic, which has increased India's need for mental health services, prompted the launch of the program. It is offered in Hindi, English, and Bengali and is a component of the National Mental Health Program in India.
Mental health professionals and advocates, who have long advocated for increased access to mental health services in India, have welcomed the service. However, there have been some concerns expressed regarding the accessibility of technology and internet connectivity in rural areas, which may restrict the program's scope.
