This procurement is a crucial component of the IndiaAI Mission, a multi-billion rupee national initiative aimed at positioning India as a global leader in AI. The GPUs will be distributed among domestic startups, researchers, institutions, and public bodies to enhance their work in AI and related fields.
Strengthening AI Infrastructure Through Strategic Partnerships
The tender outlines the creation of a consortium model, where qualified service providers can bid jointly for the contract. This model requires that all computing infrastructure be hosted locally, with strict adherence to data storage regulations within India. This initiative represents the first phase of a larger plan to deploy a 10,000-strong GPU cluster under the IndiaAI Mission, which was announced last year. The selected bidders will need to demonstrate the ability to provide AI computing resources quickly, with response times ranging from immediate to weekly, depending on the workload.

By initiating this 1,000-GPU network, the government is not only fostering the active participation of the domestic industry but also advancing the nation’s self-reliance in critical technology domains.
