Backbone of Israel's Defense: A look at its Iron Dome System

One of the most cutting-edge defensive systems in the world, Israel's Iron Dome system relies on radar to detect and eliminate aerial threats before they can do any damage. 90% of the rockets fired by Hamas in the most recent attack were intercepted by the Iron Dome system, according to the Associated Press.

According to news agency Reuters, the short-range air defence system has a 96% success rate in intercepting rockets.

In order to combat rockets fired by the terrorist organisation Hezbollah from Lebanon during the 2006 war and by Palestine's Hamas, the system was built by the government-owned Rafael Advanced Defence Systems with help from the United States. By 2011, the air defence system was fully operational.

David's Sling and Arrow are additional elements of Israel's broader air defence shield that are used to detect and neutralise medium- and long-range threats like drones and aircraft.

Arrow-3 is another air defence system developed by the Israeli military to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles beyond the earth's atmosphere.

The truck-towed Iron Dome defence system uses radar-guided missiles to shoot down short-range threats like drones, rockets, and mortars while they are still in the air.

Not all rockets detected by Israel's radar are shot down by the all-weather system. According to Reuters, the Iron Dome utilises an AI-based technology to first decide whether an incoming rocket poses a threat and would strike a populated region; if otherwise, the Iron Dome skips the rocket and permits it to enter Israel's airspace.

In order to cover a city's worth of ground, Iron Dome's initial range was between 4 and 70 km; however, it has reportedly extended.

On Saturday, Hamas militants operating out of Palestine bombarded Israel with missiles after sneaking into the communities close to the Gaza Strip via land, air, and water.

Hamas leader Mohammad Deif said in a recorded message that his organisation fired 5,000 rockets into Israel. Declaring about the operation, Deif stated, “We announce the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and we announce that the first strike, which targeted enemy positions, airports, and military fortifications, exceeded 5,000 missiles and shells.”

The Israeli military's Iron Dome anti-rocket defence system successfully intercepted a large number of missiles aimed towards Israel. However, several others managed by raiding Israeli cities.
