WhatsApp, a well-known instant messaging service with over 2 billion users, has announced that it will now support multi-device login for multiple accounts or phone numbers. The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, shared the news on Facebook and Instagram.
The ability to connect to the same WhatsApp account on up to four phones will be available to all users in the upcoming weeks, according to WhatsApp. Users can access WhatsApp Web on desktops and laptops as well. The previous limitation of using only one WhatsApp account on one phone and many ancillary desktop PCs is greatly improved by this.
With the new deployment, users will be able to synchronise their messages across devices, including other phones, enabling them to access the app on other devices even if one is off. This is possible because of WhatsApp's development of new technology that synchronises messages between devices while maintaining end-to-end encryption security.
With a small beta user base since 2021, the company has been testing multi-device interoperability. Due to WhatsApp's complete end-to-end encryption capabilities for conversations and calls, this was a challenging task. The new technique, according to the company, enables end-to-end encryption of personal messages, media, and calls by connecting each linked phone to WhatsApp separately.
The WhatsApp user's account will immediately be locked out of any auxiliary devices if the primary device isn't used for an extended period of time. The instant messaging software claims that adding phones as companion devices will facilitate user communication because users will be able to switch between devices without logging out and continue conversations where they left off.
Although Telegram and Messenger have offered multi-device message synchronisation, they have not supported end-to-end encryption, which is a key feature that sets WhatsApp apart. The addition of this new feature makes WhatsApp an important step forward for the company and makes it a more alluring messaging option for users.
Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing a brand-new one-time code-based connection technique for smartphones. Instead of using your phone to scan the QR code, you may now get a one-time-use code by simply entering your cell number on WhatsApp Web. This feature will eventually be available on more connected devices.
