Wimbledon Day 9: Alcaraz, Paolini, Vekic advance II VYGR

Day 9 at Wimbledon was particularly significant as it witnessed some of the most fascinating quarterfinal matchups in the women's and men's draws. As the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the semifinals, Daniil Medvedev defeated World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in a five-setter.

Alcaraz's unstoppable spree

In the men's singles quarterfinals, defending champion and third seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated American Tommy Paul, ranked 12th, in four sets. The defending champion stormed back to reclaim the trophy for a second round after Tommy Paul tormented Carlos Alcaraz for two sets during the Spaniard's quarterfinal victory on No. 1 Court.

Medvedev knocks out Sinner

In their quarterfinal round, fifth-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev defeated world No. 1 and top seed Jannik Sinner. Similar to the Australian Open final this year, the match between the two went to a decisive set, but Medvedev won this time.

Daniil Medvedev had lost five straight matches against the world's top player when he faced Jannik Sinner again in the quarterfinals. The fact that Medvedev prevailed 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-3, and advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row was therefore remarkable enough.

Paolini defeated Navarro

Seventh-seeded Italian Jasmine Paolini, the runner-up at the French Open, defeated 19th-seeded American Emma Navarro in straight sets in the women's singles. Emma Navarro was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Jasmine Paolini. The Italian No. 7 seed had only made three main-draw singles appearances at the All-England Club before this year.

Donna Vekic's semifinalist win

Donna Vekic defeated qualifier Lulu Sun on a wet day in SW19 to become the first semi-finalist of The Championships 2024. A Croat has advanced to the women's singles semifinals for the first time since 1999.
