A resident of Domlur successfully overcomes numerous obstacles to swim continuously even at night and in strong winds to become the first Indian woman to cross the Palk Strait.
A Bengaluru resident made history when she became the first Indian woman to successfully swim across Palk Strait. Sucheta Deb Burman, a 39-year-old resident of Domlur, successfully navigated the strait by swimming 62 kilometres in 19 hours and 31 minutes. Deb had to put in more than 50 to 70 hours of work per week for five months to prepare for her amazing display of endurance.
She attempted to swim this distance before in 2022, but she was forced to give up at 34 kilometres owing to a shoulder injury. She, however, refused to give up and over the past year, trained more diligently than ever before to return and finish the incomplete swim.
The weather becoming poor during the night and the gusts building up made Deb's swim difficult.
"When the night grew darker, I began to feel afraid since the winds grew brisk and I couldn't even see anything. Because to the poor weather, we had to swim alongside the boat, and there were times when I repeatedly struck my head and shoulder on it, but I didn't want to give up. I kept swimming because I believed in God, she recalled.
