Pat Cummins wins the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year Award

On Thursday, celebrated Australian pacer Pat Cummins received the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Year award from legendary player Ricky Ponting, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. Cummins was presented with the Sir Garfield Sobers trophy to celebrate the outstanding performances he has had in 2023. Ricky Ponting, who was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame and was the winner of the same award in 2006 and 2007, presented his compatriot with the trophy.

Just hours after he was given the accolade, Pat Cummins struck three wickets in his T20 World Cup Super 8 match against Bangladesh in Antigua, becoming the fourth Australian to take a hat-trick in T20Is. Throughout just two overs, Cummins claimed the wickets of Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, and Towhid Hridoy. Using the Duckworth Lewis (DLS) method, Australia defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs in their T20 World Cup Super Eights match.

As captain of the Test and One Day International teams, the Australian Pacer guided his squad to glory in the year that followed, first winning the World Test Championship against India at The Oval and then beating the same opponent in the Ahmedabad ODI World Cup final. Additionally, Cummins had a successful year on his own. He scored 254 runs and claimed 42 Test wickets at a pace of 27.50. Cummins also took 15 wickets and made a major impact with the bat (128 runs at 32) down the order, which helped Australia win the World Cup.

Australia under Cummins’ leadership, has a chance to win the White-ball World Cup along with the World Test Championship Cup if they win the T20 World Cup victory in 2024.
