What is the orange cap?
The Orange Cap, awarded to the top run scorer, is one of the competition's most desired individual honors. Every year, the IPL, one of the world's top T20 cricket competitions, attracts some of the game's best batting talent. The player with the most runs during the tournament wears the Orange Cap on the ground. But after the IPL 2024 season, the hitter with the most runs will receive the Orange Cap honor.
In the 16 previous incarnations of the Orange Cap, up to 13 different batters have won it at the end of the season. Virat Kohli scored 973 runs in the 2016 season, setting a record for most runs in a single IPL season.
Top 5 Contenders who could win orange cap
Virat Kohli
Kohli has been free of captaincy duties since 2021, allowing him to unleash his full batting potential without the additional strain of leadership responsibilities. Kohli's track record of over 7200 runs in 237 matches speaks eloquently about his batting ability. After scoring 639 runs in a season that included two hundred and six fifties, Kohli's appetite for runs is still unquenchable. Being the mainstay of RCB's batting order, Kohli's capacity to lead innings and produce lengthy, significant blows will be crucial to the triumph of his side. With his recent successes in international cricket and his newfound determination, he might be able to add the elusive Orange Cap to his impressive list of accomplishments.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
Jaiswal has been playing incredibly lately, and he can lead his team to the postseason on his own. His remarkable performance in the Test series against England, where he amassed 655 runs in just 4 matches, highlights his extraordinary talent and poise under duress. He is currently creating waves for India. He was named Emerging Player of the Year in the previous IPL season after scoring an astounding 625 runs in 14 games. Jaiswal, who has amassed 1172 runs in 37 IPL games, is a man to keep an eye on as he looks to lead the Rajasthan Royals to victory in the forthcoming competition. He is known for his ability to deliver at key times.
Henrich Klassen
The South African batsman has recently been in excellent form, as evidenced by his performances in the ongoing IPL 2024. Heinrich Klaasen surged up the IPL run-scoring standings with a 24-run innings against Gujarat Titans on Sunday, and he is now only a few runs away from donning the renowned orange cap. Notably, Klaasen has amassed 167 runs at an average of 83 and a strong strike rate of 219 in just three games this season. His Sunrisers Hyderabad campaign has been going incredibly well. He is poised to maintain his position as one of the league's top hitters in the upcoming season because of his consistency and strokeplay.
Riyan Parag
Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag is having a splendid Indian Premier League (IPL) season. After an underwhelming 2023 season, the RR batter has come back into his elements and has let his bat do the talking. After guiding RR to a sublime six-wicket win over MI in their IPL match at the Wankhede Stadium, the Assam-born batter is now the list of the holder of the Orange Cap - a distinction given to players with the most number of runs in the league.
Rohit Sharma
Despite recent struggles in the tournament, Rohit’s vast experience and innate talent make him a compelling candidate for the Orange Cap. Freed from the burden of captaincy in IPL, Rohit can channel his focus entirely into his batting, reminiscent of his match-winning performances in the 2019 World Cup. His recent T20 century against Afghanistan is a testament to his form and class. With 6211 runs in 243 matches, Rohit remains a formidable force at the crease, poised to make a resounding impact in the upcoming season.
