Kane Williamson has stepped down as the captain of New Zealand’s white-ball cricket teams and declined a central contract from the board for the 2024-25 season, effective June 19, Wednesday. The New Zealand Cricket Board announced Williamson’s decision on their official website, noting that the veteran cricketer aims to prolong his international career.
Disappointing World Cup Campaign
Williamson's decision follows New Zealand’s disappointing exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. The Blackcaps failed to advance past the group stages after losses to the West Indies and Afghanistan. New Zealand’s international schedule for the 2024-25 season includes very few home matches, particularly during the January window, which Williamson cited as a factor in his decision.
Commitment to International Cricket
Despite stepping down from the captaincy and declining the central contract, Williamson reiterated his commitment to New Zealand cricket. "Helping push the team forward across the formats is something I’m very passionate about and something I want to keep contributing towards," Williamson stated. He emphasized that his decision should not be seen as a lack of interest in international cricket, and he remains open to accepting a central contract in the future.
Family Time and Overseas Opportunities
Williamson highlighted the importance of balancing his cricket career with family time. "Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished," he said. However, he noted that spending more time with his family has become increasingly important. "My life outside cricket has changed... enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that’s even more important to me."
In addition to Williamson, fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has also declined a central contract from the New Zealand Cricket Board.
