The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced the Yo-Yo Test as part of selection criteria for the Indian team.
This recommendation was made during a review meeting that took place on Sunday, January 1 in Mumbai.
What is the Yo-Yo test?
The test is a long standing training exercise used to determine the fitness of an athlete. It is commonly used in football.
How is the Yo-Yo test conducted?
In the Yo-Yo test players have to run from one point to another (B to C) as soon as the buzzer buzzes, the distance being 20 metres. Then return back to the cone they started (C to B) after which they get a 10 second recovery time (B to A).
What is the reason for the test?
The Yo-Yo test is being done in the selection process, as it signifies the running between the wickets which happens during a match.
It also proves various requirements of the selection process, like fitness, agility, consistency and form.
How has the Indian team performed in the test?
The Indian team has done very well in the test. Virat Kohli was especially great in the Yo-Yo test. Cricketers Manish Pandey, Karun Nair and Mayank Dagar have out performed Virat Kohli in the test.
Disadvantages of the Yo-Yo- test?
The Yo-Yo test isn't the perfect test for many as it doesn't take cricketing ability or talent in consideration.
India has over time given the world legendary cricketers, and that not only has to do with how fit they were but how incredibly talented and devoted they were. Although fitness is important and necessary for being a professional cricketer, the Yo-Yo test isn't a do or die part of the selection process.
