After a Promising start for team India in the Hockey World Cup campaign with a win against Spain and Wales, India crashed out in a must-win encounter. It was a cross-over match against New Zealand. During the penalty shootouts, India fell a goal short.
A superlative start from team India put them into the lead in the first half by 2-0. The opener was scored by Lalit Kumar Upadhyay 17', followed by Sukhjeet Singh 24'.
While New Zealand had answers to the attack by India, they came back strongly to score their opening goal by Sam Lane 28', just before the quarters.
The stadiums were jam-packed with people. Hockey enthusiasts turned up in huge numbers for the decider to support team India at the Kalina stadium. With India finishing 3rd and bagging a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics people certainly had high hopes for team India in this world cup campaign.
The main reason for the shocking loss was Multiple missed chances of penalty corners. India couldn't utilize the chances properly and failed to convert them into goals due to which, the hosts are officially out of the Hockey World Cup 2023.
