Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, suffered a humiliating 103-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2026 clash. After posting a formidable total of 207/6 at the Wankhede Stadium, CSK bowled out Mumbai for just 104 runs. This loss marks Mumbai’s biggest defeat in terms of runs in IPL history, while CSK registered their biggest-ever victory.
Sanju Samson and Akeal Hosein Shine Bright
The victory was powered by outstanding performances from Sanju Samson and Akeal Hosein. Samson, who was named Player of the Match, smashed an unbeaten 101 off 54 balls, including 10 fours and six sixes. Meanwhile, Hosein delivered a match-winning spell, picking up four wickets for just 17 runs in his four overs, including a maiden.
Top-Order Collapse Seals Mumbai’s Fate
Chasing a daunting target, Mumbai Indians had a disastrous start. Openers Danish Malewar (0), Quinton de Kock (7), and Naman Dhir (0) were all dismissed with just 11 runs on the board. The early collapse proved too costly, putting immense pressure on the middle order.
Middle-Order Fightback Falls Short
Despite a brief recovery attempt by Suryakumar Yadav (36 off 20) and Tilak Varma (37 off 20), who added 73 runs for the fourth wicket, Mumbai never truly regained control. Apart from these two, no other batter managed to reach double digits, and the team lost their last six wickets for just 20 runs.
Hardik Pandya Highlights Powerplay Collapse
Speaking after the match, Hardik Pandya admitted that the team’s biggest setback came in the powerplay. He stated that losing three wickets early made the chase extremely difficult and prevented the team from building any momentum. He emphasized that Mumbai failed to recover from the pressure created in the initial overs and acknowledged that the batting performance was far from ideal.
No Excuses on Pitch Conditions
When questioned about the pitch, Hardik made it clear that conditions were not to blame. He pointed out that CSK batted on the same surface and performed exceptionally well, particularly praising Sanju Samson’s innings. According to him, maintaining rhythm while chasing such a target was crucial, something Mumbai failed to achieve.
Points Table Impact and What Lies Ahead
With this victory, Chennai Super Kings climbed three spots to reach fifth position in the points table, securing three wins from seven matches. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians suffered their fifth defeat in seven games and slipped to eighth place with just four points. Mumbai will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 29 at Wankhede Stadium.
A Record-Breaking Loss Ends Long-Standing Streak
This defeat marked the end of a significant record for Mumbai Indians. The team had never previously lost a match by a margin of 100 or more runs in IPL history. Interestingly, Mumbai still holds the record for the biggest win by runs in the league, having defeated Delhi by 146 runs in 2017.
Before this match, Mumbai’s largest defeat was by 87 runs against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur in 2013. At their home ground, their biggest loss had been just 39 runs, against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2015 season. However, CSK’s dominant performance has now rewritten those records, handing Mumbai Indians their most crushing defeat ever.
