Known for its unique landscapes and unique experiences, Qatar is the stage for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which runs from 21 November to 18 December. FIFA World Cup is being held in Qatar for the first time as a Muslim-majority country and as the third Asian country to host an event of this magnitude.
For the past 12 years, Qatar has been waiting for this chance, which has now come to fruition. But there have been numerous arguments and misunderstandings since this news broke. The schedule change for this tournament due to the heat wave in Qatar and the behaviour problems with migrant workers are both making headlines.
The most controversial aspect, in addition to all of these issues, is the prohibition of alcohol in sporting venues. A celebration, the Fifa World Cup is more than just a tournament. A visit by fans to the host nation is months in the making. Beer has become a crucial component of the celebration of this game.
In this case, the decision to ban beer and the announcement timing—just two days before the first game—have discouraged many fans from travelling to Qatar. As beer is strictly forbidden in stadiums, it has also caused tension for World Cup sponsor Budweiser.
How much control Fifa has over this World Cup has been questioned frequently, as well as what changes will be made for the 2022 Fifa World Cup. The best beer in the world, Budweiser, tweeted, "Well, this is awkward," expressing its displeasure. And the tweet was deleted after 90 minutes without any further explanation.
As alcohol is strictly forbidden in Qatar, the country that is hosting the World Cup, beer will no longer be allowed inside the stadiums. However, it has been announced that World Cup supporters will be able to consume beer or alcohol in the evening at the Fifa Fan Festival. All of the fans will be able to enjoy live music, entertaining activities, and alcohol at this festival.
Also, fans will not get any alcohol outside the stadium as well. Fifa World Cup sponsor Budweiser is in a difficult position as their revenue increases with this tournament. But in 2022 they will see a major setback in sales.
The 2014 Fifa World Cup experienced the same issue. When Brazil outlawed alcohol in stadiums due to fighting between fans. However, Fifa forced Brazil to alter its laws during the tournament by claiming that "Drinking is not the primary reason for all fans to travel here, but it is part of the football culture."
Surprisingly, it appears that the prohibition on alcohol only applies to fans in the stands as an Official Fifa Champagne, and some carefully chosen wines will be offered in the stadium's extravagant suites reserved for Fifa officials and other wealthy visitors.
Fans of the 2022 Fifa World Cup are undoubtedly disappointed by the last-minute change. And now they are worried about other commitments made by the hosting nation Qatar regarding accommodations, transportation, or cultural issues.
Beer or no Beer, We wish all of the teams the best of luck and competitive spirit for this incredible game.
