Dying in the Line of Duty: Belgian Goalkeeper Arne Passes away after Saving Penalty

Arne Espeel, a Belgian goalkeeper, died on Saturday, collapsing on the field after saving a team penalty. He was 25.

When Westrozebeke was awarded a penalty kick in the second half, Winkel Sport B, who play in the second provincial division of West Brabant in Belgium, led 2-1. Espeel held on to the spot kick, but he fell to the ground after it.

Espeel was rushed to the hospital by emergency personnel, who attempted to revive him with a defibrillator but he was later declared dead.

“Winkel Sport is in very deep mourning by the sudden death of Arne Espeel,” the club said in a statement. “We wish the family and friends of Arne our heartfelt condolences in this heavy loss. Football is an afterthought.”
