The International Cricket Council (ICC) is thrilled that cricket has been recommended for inclusion in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The ICC collaborated closely with LA28 for two years to make this happen, and now the recommendation will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for approval.
Cricket has only been played once in the Olympics, back in 1900 in Paris. However, the 2028 Olympics will feature both men's and women's cricket tournaments, which could tap into the lucrative Asian subcontinent commercial market.
ICC Chairman Greg Barclay expressed his delight at the recommendation, although he noted that it is not the final decision. He thanked LA28 for their support during the evaluation process and looks forward to the final decision being made at the IOC session in India during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup next week.
In addition to cricket, flag football has also taken a significant step towards becoming an Olympic sport in 2028. This is seen as a victory for the NFL and Los Angeles organisers, as it will bring a uniquely American sport to the world's largest sports festival.
The Los Angeles organising committee delivered its proposal for flag football to the IOC on Monday, and it is set to be voted on later this month at the IOC's meeting in Mumbai, India. The LA committee will reveal the proposal's specifics at a later time.
